Family Reunion

Family reunion this weekend. We are in charge. We are doing a Dr. Seuss theme. Each family has a book they will dress as and act out. Activities include find you families feet. We will line them up behind sheets so you can't see the people and only see their feet and we are tagging everyone's feet with a number. The dad's have to find their families feet. Then we will turn it around and the kids will find their dad's feet. We are having a fishing pond and cat throw (stuffed) and a ping pong ball throw into fish bowls. If they get one in the bowl they get the fish. The parents are going to love that. They should be glad it's not kittens. Then we are doing the whole green eggs and ham menu. Every year we have a time for mom and dad to share some of their wisdom with the family. This is a very special informative and special time. Should be fun.

BMW Z-4 change of view

We went driving in my husbands new BMW Z-4 convertible. We drove to our cabin at Bear Lake. The drive is usually made in a hurry but the scenery is always beautiful. Driving through the canyon with no roof on the car was a whole new experience. The view was incredible. It was so fun that I really took time to notice the jagged rocks, and the clouds hovering over the peaks of the mountains, the rock climbers on the cliffs, and the green of the pine trees contrasting against the lingering snow in crevasses. I really enjoyed the ride. I didn't think I would like the little sports car very much. I have always been more of the SUV kind of gal but.... watch out Gaylan I just may want to borrow that little car every so often.

I am at the Casual Blogger Conference learning more about blogging. Julie McDonald is a great teacher. She is very good at creating cute and interesting blog backgrounds she runs leeloublogs.blogspot.com. I am excited to learn about the design part of blogging. I learned to use feedburner.google.com for subscriptions for your news letters. It was very easy to use and collects your subscribers and emails out your newsletter. We went walking in our beautiful neighborhood with our dogs, little princess of a dog Chi Chi, and our puffy Mr. Simba We walked and visited friends. It was a lovely evening. It was fun spending time with my husband and our dogs. The only hard part is Chi doesn't like to walk every once in a while she decides she will pull a tantrum and she will plant her feet and refuse to walk. We have to bribe her and then she will decide to go with us.

Thanksgiving was awesome. My sister-in-law Shirley is a master cook so it was a feast of the best kind. The turkey was perfect and juicy the ham had juice coming out as we cut it.

Wendover Weekend

We went on a weekend to Wendover, Nevada at the Rainbow Hotel & Casino.

We stayed in one of their Jacuzzi Suites. It was romantic, comfortable, and fun. The Jacuzzi was right in the room with a mirror overhead and double rope lighting with mirror accents around the ceiling. As we laid in the king size bed we watched the flat screen TV and enjoyed the fluffy comforter.

There are mirrors surrounding the jacuzzi tub. At the back of the tub there is a water fall that runs when the jets are on.

The staff had made pretty fans out of the towls on the Jacuzzi. The only thing missing was the bubble bath and the rubber ducky.

The bathroom had a steam shower. A combination of a shower and a steam room. I really liked sitting in the steam.

The buffet had a wide variety of items. My very favorite and why I think I love to go there is to have "Lace Cookies." I like the buffet at the Rainbow because it is a rain forest setting. Rain is just by sound effects. There is a Burger King, McDonald's, Subway and a couple grocery stores for less expensive food. There is also stuff to pick up at the gas stations.

They have a park behind the welcome center that has a playground, picnic area, basketball court and tennis court.

There is a golf course on the west end of town. I was amazed at the level of talent they bring into the West Wendover Concert Hall. There is more detailed information in some earlier posts.

Last night we had a party at the JET Nightclub. The dancing was fun. Everyone was inclusive and friendly. They served appetizers. Great music for dancing. It wasn't the place to network as in exchanging info but you did get to interact and have fun together then I found those people today and made contact then. The parties are good to go to. They only last a couple hours and then there is the rest of the night to hit the casino or hit the strip, or in my case hit the pillow.

Las Vegas Convention Center

As you get off the monorail you have a short walk over to the convention center. As you come in it is a spacious building. I went up the escalator and off to the right was the registration. First you go to an open computer and put you name in and it pulls up your info, check it for correctness and then get in the pick up line. They gave us a badge and lunch tickets (for full pass registrants) They had bagels & muffins, coffee and water. Then you pick up you packet and event book. Classes had plenty of room except for one. But still everyone that wanted into the class got in. Hint & Tip: Sit up front in case the speakers aren't loud enough and there are tables up front. One lady had a great idea. Bring an extension cord (3 prong) and Electric strip. Sit where the gold electric outlet is in the floor. Hook up and provide for others. Everyone will love you. If you get chilly bring a sweater as the AC can get a little cool. Most everyone had a computer and took note on it or tweeted during the lectures.

Arriving in Las Vegas

When I got to the airport in Las Vegas I went out the transportation doors and took a shuttle bus (Bell Trans.) to the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel & Casino. They were great and very inexpensive. I paid $6.50 for one person. I got into the hotel at 8:00 a.m. and they let me check in. Very friendly. Nice hotel room. Nothing outstanding put clean and nice. I went down to the monorail that is located right outside a side door of the Hilton Hotel. I bought a 3 day pass that cost me $30. It was quick and comfortable. The Las Vegas Convention Center is the first stop from the Hilton.

I am so excited. I am back to blogging. I am headed to Las Vegas to the BlogWorld Expo. Maybe I will learn to be a better blogger. Since I'm going to Vegas I thought I'd share some cool things to see and do in Vegas.

There are two restaurants in Vegas that I know of that start with Dick. (Makes me laugh) One is Dickey’s Barbecue Pit and the other is Dick’s Last Resort.

As you are coming from or going to the airport I make a stop at Dickey’s Barbecue Pit on . It is South on Las Vegas Blvd down by the airport. The address is 7430 Las Vegas Blvd.

They have meat platters and sandwiches.

I like their waffle fries, baked potatoes and baked potato casserole sides too.

I got a kick out of their Bright Yellow CUPS. They want you to take your cup with you and then photograph it different places in the world and send them the photo. I thought the gimmick was fun. They also do catering and takeout. If your lookin’ for barbecue then make a stop here.

Now for a full out fun wacky, side splitting laughter, not quit vulgar statements and jokes, and the best Rude Service anywhere. Beware this is not the restaurant for the prudish or conservative. You will find Dick’s Last Resort in the Excalibur Hotel & Casino, 3850 Las Vegas Blvd South.

The menu was an adventure in itself. I had “Drunken Shrimp” and a large non-alcoholic daiquiri. I loved the food, the servers and the whole experience. While I was there it was loud with live entertainment.

Bra’s hanging from the bar. (Want to contribute? No I didn't!) They put dunce looking white hats on several people with raunchy sayings on them. Fun, we were laughing and hated to leave.

In my life I have redone apartments hundreds of time over the last 30+ years. I have done painting, wallpapering and decorating in the apartments . (as long as I wasn't rushed) Over all that time I have learned what painting equipment and cleaning products worked best for me. Here is a video I made while painting one of the apartments a few months ago. It shows what paint brushes and rollers I like the best and why. (I know I am chewing gum. I always do when I paint.) Now I mostly hire this done but once in a while I still do one.

Wake Up Chi Chi, it's Christmas.

I thought I would share what Christmas looked like at our house this year. The only kids we had at home this year were the dogs. They each had their own stocking. Chi Chi got the biggest stocking. Yup! Spoilt dog!

One of our Christmas trees is decorated with Delft Blue Ornaments that we got when we were in Holland. My husband served a mission there so we like to go back there to visit and we decorate this tree as a reminder of those times.

Another of our trees is a tradition from both of our families. It is a Silver Pom Pom Christmas Tree. We don't put lights on the tree because that would be a fire hazard but they have a color wheel that is put under the tree that shines the colors up into the tree and shines that color in the tree. I love to sit at night and watch the tree change colors. It is very pretty and relaxing. Here it is with the red shining on it.

This is our other dog "Simba." He is also spoilt and runs the family with "Chi Chi." He could smell the treats in the stocking and was trying to figure out how to get them out.

I like to make little scenes out of the decorations around the house.

Fasnachskuchlein Making

Today was our family Christmas party. We follow an old tradition of making "Fasnachtsküchlein."

Everyone has to try saying fasnachtskuchleins with the guttural throat sound. They are the Swiss carnival cookie. They are also called "Chnüblätz" as we pronounce it -Kneeblates. They are nick named Kneeblates because you can stretch them over your knee. They are a traditional treat made at Christmas or Carnival.

First we mix the dough and knead it and then divide it into small balls. Then the balls are rolled really thin.

After rolling them thin we take them and stretch them until they are almost see thru. Small holes are good because they make it more crisp when fried.

The Fasnachtskuchleins are laid out on dish towels in layers to dry for about an hour before frying.

We use a deep frying pan to fry them in vegetable oil. The trick is to fry them fast but not get them too brown. We use special paddles to turn them during frying.

The next step is to take a shaker and more than cover the fasnachs in granulated sugar.

We made 3 batches that made 22 plates of 8 each. Each family gets to take home a plate to eat.

The recipe that we use is
1 tsp. salt
2 cups of sugar
6 eggs
6 cups of flour

Mix everything but the flour and then gradually add the flour. Let it mix until well kneaded. We use a bosh type mixer

For my 50th birthday we stole away for a night to Wendover, Nevada.

We drove out from Salt Lake City to Wendover. On the way out about 95 miles west of Salt Lake City on the north side of of I-80 we passed a large tree sculpture created by artist Karl Momen, a Swedish-American Artist and Sculpture. It is called by several names but the two most popular are Metaphor, The Tree of Life and Metaphor, The Tree of Utah. The artist drove though that area and saw that the landscape was barren and boring and he decided to build something with color. He bought land and financed the project himself. The tree is 87 feet tall and has 6 balls on branches and several pieces on the ground and the base of the tree. It is cement covered with ceramic tiles, rocks and minerals. It was finished in 1987 and donated to the State of Utah. I love the tree. The plaque says ”A hymn to our universe whose glory and dimension is beyond all myth and imagination.” It gives you something to look at and wakes you up on a long trip of nothing but sand. I think they should allow different artist to create other artwork there or along the way and have it be an outdoor roadside art show. It feels like the sand goes on for a very long way.

Just before Wendover is where the Bonneville raceway and the salt flats are located. This is where the land speed records have been set. During trials people bring their campers and RV’s or stayed in Wendover and go out and watch the races and time trails. We stayed at the Montego Bay in a Mini Suite. The rooms were great! Our room was decorated in Royal Purple. The room was extra large and had a Jacuzzi in the corner of the bedroom. There were themed decorations of palm trees and even the lamps had a Caribbean theme. The room had a large flat screen TV, a modern looking refrigerator, and the shower was also a steam room. www.wendoverresorts.com

The casino was hopin’. There were a lot of people there for a Sunday night. The next day we went sightseeing. My brother in law is a history buff and has a memory for facts that is phenomenal.. He took us to the Historic Wendover Air Force Base Museum.

It is a small museum that is big on facts. I learned more there in our ½ hour visit than I learned in all of High School about the atomic bomb that was dropped on Japan.
There are replicas of the Air Force Base, memorabilia, weapons, uniforms, planes, pictures, maps as well as information on the Enola Gay and the Little Boy Atomic Bomb.

Also at the Air Force Base on the other side of the parking lot from the museum is a plane used in several scenes in the 1977 movie “Con Air.”
It is a gutted plane that they used in the movie. I could see in my mind all the seats and then there was the cargo bay that I remembered from the movie. It was just open and we could walk around in it.

I did enjoy watching the clouds on the drive back. They were very fascinating and deep in color and contrast.

I took a couple pictures of the Morton Salt Plant. I called to see if they had public tours but was told they didn’t. They would have been interesting.

Painting with Chi the Chihuahua

Do you want to go to a place where there is more to see that you can do in a month, new adventures, great music, culture, theatre, something for everyone?

I have loved San Francisco because I can never go there too many times. I still have a ton of things I want to see. There are some things I go back and see every time because they are just too cool to miss. I seem to always have people traveling with me. I have found you have to have a plan and be prepared before you go on your trip so that you can take advantage of the time that you have there, otherwise you will waste time deciding what to do or going from one end of town to the other and you will waste a lot of time on traveling every day. Café Eight is a small charming seafood café on the dock at the cross street of Taylor and Jefferson. It is down the boardwalk with all the other little seafood stands. Get a seat by the window and overlook the fishing boats. The food was the best. We had fish and chips and clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl with salad. The bread bowl had a crispy crust and soft center. The food and the service were superb.

Buying Real Estate

The first thing I consider when looking at buying a rental property is what area I should buy in. I let my real estate agent know what areas I want to look at so that I am not wasting my time or theirs by going to areas that would not fill my goals. I drive through the area at different times of day also. Make sure you go by after 10 pm to get a feet for the area at night. I want an area that the renters are generally long term tenants. Is there employment near by, Is is a place of high turn over, Is it convenient to get to, is the area in good repair, Is the area in high demand for apartments or rental houses, find out what the competition is in the area, What are the neighbors like, Once I determine that I will be able to rent to people who will stay a minimum of a year and will enjoy and feel safe in the area then I start to look at the building.

Denio Junction Lunch Stop, Winnemucca

We stopped at the 140 Junction at the Denio Junction Motel and Café to eat lunch. On our way out we asked directions from a lady and she was just passing through but told us we should stop and eat at this little café because it was very good. We didn’t have time and we had eaten in Winnemucca so we didn’t eat there on our way to Klamath Falls. We stopped on our way back and from the outside it doesn’t look like much but the inside it has a warm wooden interior, it is cute, clean and unique. There are several booths and a sit up bar. Everything is wood. The ceiling and beams, the bar, the walls, and the booths. It is obvious that this is a place frequented by hunters. There are deer, antelope, and elk heads on the walls and pictures everywhere of hunters and their catches. There were even a couple of rattle snake skins and cow hides hanging on the wall. They are open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. when the kitchen is closed. They serve breakfast in the morning and the lunch and dinner menu are the same. The lunch menu had burgers, salads, ice cream, a kid meals and drinks. We had the Denio Burger. It looked deliciously juicy and thick. It didn’t disappoint me. It had a thick beef patty with cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomatoes and onions. My husband and I usually share a meal and told them that we wanted to share. My son and his wife shared a Western Burger. When they brought them out to us they were split in two and served in separate baskets. The condiments were on the table. The service was great. Bobby bought the business three years ago. And he is the cook. As you know when the owner is there the business is generally a good business. I was a salad that someone else ordered and it looked good too. One note is that they only take cash. If you are out of cash there is an atm machine there. They have a little store there. They were watching a football game on the TV and they were all cheering and talking about the fame. There was a chart on the bar counter with everyone’s names on the football betting pool.

We made a stop in Elko to see if we could see any of the damage form the earthquake from a couple years ago. We went by the casinos that we used to come out and stay in on bus tours. The Stockmans and the Clondike. Maverick gas station was our gas stop and snack station in Winnemucca, NV. There are several casinos there too. We had a quiet late night ride back to Logan.

We pasted on Hwy 140 both coming and going to Klammath Falls. There were road signs with pictures of horses and then donkeys. We didn't see the horses but we did get to see the donkeys. Going up the were crossing the road in front of us and then going home we saw the donkeys again and this time there were two baby donkeys. They were right at the side of the road. I was going to do a video of them when we saw them again but I got so excited about taking pictures of them that I forgot. We saw two other groups of donkeys out further in the distance and one donkey on its own by the road.

Lakeview Oregon

My favorite town was Lakeview. The town promotes itself as "The Hand Gliding Capital of the West." Lakeview is localed east of Klamath Falls on Highway 140. It is also known as one of the tallest town in Oregon. It's elevation is 4,800 feet above sea level. The town has a picture of a cowboy that looks a lot like the one in Las Vegas. It is found several places. At the town entrance, at the entrance to the fair grounds and even on the Safeway sign. I searched for a while to get the story on the cowboy symbol and finally found a blog that told all about the contravery over the two different ones. I wanted to go visit this little local museum. I love to explore the small places that make up a town but it was closed. I will check it out next time I come through here.

We ate at the Queen Burger that was next to the museum. It was good and very hometown feel.

The water tank about the city say "1988 Finalist for All America City"

The best price on gas was at the Cheveron Station on the corner of the highway junction. It was hard to get used to the fact that you don’t pump your own gas in Oregon. There are servicemen that fill your tank. They tell you not to pump your gas they do it for you. One of the service men said that in Lakeview alone that created 20 plus jobs. So it was good for us and for them. He said they are one of two states that the service stations service includes pumping your gas. It was kind of fun to be waited on. He cleaned our windshield and offered to check the oil.

Hunters Hot Springs has Old Perpetual Geyser that goes off every 90 minutes or so in the rainy season. It shoots water up of 60 feet in the air. It is the only hot water geyser in the Pacific Northwest. You can stay at the resort and enjoy the hot springs and the Geyser Grill Resturant. The question I get most often is "Should I buy an Apartment?" Even my kids asked me that. And the answer I give is ...it depends. Here are some questions that you should ask yourself.
1. Can you be tough if someone breaks the rules or are late paying thier rent.
2. Have you done the proper research on the property. A. Does it Cash Flow? B. Why is it being sold? C. Does it have a good rental history? D. Have you talked to the neighbors? E. How does the rent compare to other apartments in the area that stay rented for a minumium of one year? F. Are there any city code violations? G. Have done a survey of the renters? H. What do the utilities run? I. Have you checked the electrical and plumbing and heating? There are a number more I will go through later.
3. Do you intend to be a landlord for the rest of your life?
4. How will the tax laws effect you?
5. Do you have the skills to fix minor repairs? Can you fix a leaky faucet? Can you paint and clean? Can you clean a clogged drain?
6. Do you have money to fix problems that may arise soon after you buy the property before you have time to start saving money?

Cattle Fields

The mountains here are like something out of a retirement dream. The valleys were filled with cattle mostly of the Angus variety. At the edge of the lake there were hundreds of ducks. It looked like the water had dark spots all over in it.

Lodge at Crater Lake (Super Food)

My son and his new wife.

We went from Klamath Falls up to Crater Lake. We went up there to see the lake but when we got there it started to snow. It was beautiful. We couldn’t see down into the crater to see the lake but we went into the lodge and warmed ourselves by the fire. There are two huge fireplaces in the lodge. The man at the front desk was so helpful giving us information on the area and the hotel. It looked like such a fun and great place to stay. We had lunch in the lodge restaurant. I had clam chowder and the Crater Lodge Salad. The Salad had a raspberry vinaigrette dressing with chopped nuts and apples. My husband had the Monte Cristo Sandwich. It was like a very fancy French toast sandwich. He just kept saying this is so good. This is sooo good. It had turkey, ham cheese inside and was dusted with powdered sugar. The fries were thick and fried to perfection. The hot chocolate came in a V-glass. It was pretty and smooth topped with whipped cream and chocolate topping. They kept coming and refilling it. The service was great.

Next we toured North of Klamath. We went to a housing division where the houses were built along waterway fingers. They had boats docked behind their houses. It was a place I could relax and live in.
We drove through the Running Y Resort. There were houses all over in the trees. The resort has a swimming pool, golf course, an ice skating rink and lots of amenities. There are time share condo's there. It would be a beautiful relaxing place to go on vacation.
We went by a place where they are mining the gray rock out of the hill that is being used by various companies to melt and then spin it into a product that is strong like steel but can be used instead of fiberglass.
We went to a canyon that is made of pumas rock. It had grey pumas walls and I think it was called Abby Canyon.
When we came back we went to the Klamath Falls Yacht Club or Pelican Yacht Club. It was a little dock area with boat slips. On one of the long docks there were pelicans packed together covering the dock.
We went to a gas station just north of there. I used the bathroom because I had to and it was the dirtiest ugliest bathroom I had seen in the US. I had to clean the toilet before I could even stand it. The people following me should be grateful. There is still a working Mill here. I was sad to see the pilings left over from former mills that are no longer in existence. The town is still recovering from the loss of mill work. There is the Air Force Base here that flies the F15’s. There were lots of deer along the way. What fragile agile creatures they are.
The Klamath Falls area is a great mix of farm, open country, rivers, lakes, mountains and towns. You could spend a week or more and still have more to see.
We didn’t get to go to the Wild bird refuge or the lava caves but they sounded fun too.

Touring Klamath Falls Area

We stopped at the Klamath Fish Hatchery a stop I would have made for sure if I had children with me. There were 7 of us adults. We had a blast. I was shocked by the number of fish that are grown here each year. We saw rainbow trout, brown trout and they have Salmon too. Look at this picture of thousands of baby fish. They moved together as a school. You could just wander around and look at all the different bays and ponds. It was really fun to watch them.

We went to a small pier overlooking the river and fed the fish. They would come up to the surface and swoop up the food. Some were huge!

Trip from Logan Utah to Klamath Falls Oregon

We drove for 12 hours from Logan, Utah to Klamath Falls, Oregon. We went from Logan to Tremonton to Snowville to Park Valley to Oasis to Wells to Winnemucca to Denio to Lakeview to Klamath Falls. The scenery from Park Valley to Oasis was flat and pretty boring. There started to be pretty interesting scenery from clouds to rock formations on the mountain sides and flowering sagebrush. The scenery was sparse but beautiful.

We drove straight through except for gas and a fast food stop in Elko. We stopped at the KFC in Elko. The managment and employees were great, way outstanding service and happy greetings and the food was excellent.

Klamath Falls area is spread out over a large area but the town itself is not very big. They do have a Wal-Mart so they are on the map.
